A Message from Gabe:
Greetings Rhode Islanders,
This week, Republicans' policies shut down the federal government.
Conservatives in Washington had a choice between two decisions: undo the $1 trillion they took out of the health care system in the Big, Ugly Law while protecting the ability of 22 million Americans and 40,000 Rhode Islanders to pay for their health care or shut down the government and put millions of federal workers and essential services in jeopardy. Trump and Republicans' policies shut down the government, all while they control the White House, Senate, and House.
I spoke with more than 17,000 Rhode Islanders during a telephone town hall on Tuesday night about the harmful shutdown and what I’m doing to hold Trump accountable for the pain his policies are inflicting on Rhode Islanders. Click here to learn more about how the shutdown may impact you. Some federal workers will be furloughed and some will continue working and receive backpay. As a result, as I note in my X thread, customer service may be slow at some federal agencies. Our Rhode Island office remains open and ready to assist you. If you need help, visit our website or call our Rhode Island office at 401-729-5600. |
I stand with the countless federal employees and contractors who dutifully carry out functions that keep our government going, many making sacrifices and choosing the federal workforce over other options. Unfortunately, federal workers, to no fault of their own, are experiencing uncertainty. If you are one of those employees, please call our office to discuss any assistance we can provide. Additionally, I have asked the Chief Administrative Officer of the House of Representatives to withhold my pay until the shutdown is over. I want to have a bipartisan agreement between Democrats and Republicans to open government and protect health care access and affordability.

Congressman Amo highlights his efforts as he shows up to work in Washington while House Republicans were absent. |
Minutes after the start of the shutdown at midnight on October 1, Congressman Amo joins colleagues to discuss the impact of expiring health care tax credits. |
Rhode Islanders deserve a fully-funded, functional government that meets the needs of working families and people throughout our communities. Rhode Islanders also deserve affordable and accessible health care. I am working tirelessly to deliver both. |
Sincerely, |

Should Trump and Republicans negotiate with Democrats to end this government shutdown? |

Explaining Health Care Focus and Local Shutdown Impacts |

Congress must negotiate a way out of this shutdown. On WPRI 12, I detailed my efforts in Washington and spoke about why we need to protect the tax credits that keep our health care costs from rising. Congress must extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits or Rhode Islanders will see their premiums skyrocket. |

Responding to Attacks on Healthcare and Shutdown Impacts |

Congressman Amo speaks with cancer doctors and researchers who help treat cancer about the impacts of Trump's healthcare and science policies. |
Congressman Amo meets with 2-1-1 call center workers to hear how the shutdown is impacting Rhode Islanders and their efforts to help our neighbors. |
A government shut down hurts all of us — and I'm working with leaders across Rhode Island to minimize the impacts of Republicans' policies. |
Yesterday, I visited Brown University's Legorreta Cancer Center to discuss how Trump and Republicans’ funding cuts and policies shutting down the government harm cancer research. Their work to improve cancer prevention and treatment is amazing. Congress must fight to protect lifesaving research and Americans' health care. |
I also stopped by United Way of Rhode Island's 2-1-1 call center to thank them for filling the gap for Rhode Islanders needing even more help during the government shutdown. With increased pressure on Rhode Island households, I’ll keep fighting to lower costs and save health care. |

Last week was Startup week in Rhode Island, and we celebrated our young inventors, scientists, and entrepreneurs at the Innovation@Brown showcase.
Amidst Trump’s policies attacking scientific research, I spoke about how I am focused on supporting innovation in Rhode Island to pioneer the discoveries of tomorrow.

In Rhode Island, there are so many ways to enjoy the great outdoors!
Legislation like my bipartisan Veterans Get Outside Resolution encourages Veterans to get outside and experience the mental health benefits of nature.
On National Public Lands Day, I encouraged all to enjoy being outside!

In September, I closed out National Senior Center Month with Senator Jack Reed, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, and East Bay state legislators at Benjamin Church Senior Center in Bristol to discuss our work in Congress to protect Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security from Trump's cuts and defend them for all Rhode Islanders.

Showing Up to Work to for Our Values and to Stop a Shutdown |

CLICK HERE TO WATCH: Congressman Amo joins NBC 10 to discuss his efforts to reopen the federal government. |
On the first day of the shutdown, I discussed conservatives' failure to show up to the Capitol, their cuts to our health care system, and their failure to compromise to extend premium tax credits under the Affordable Care Act. |
I am fighting for Rhode Islanders and all those across the country who could face increased health care costs if Congressional leaders do not negotiate a way out of this shutdown. |

Countering Trump's Policies in the Courts |
The Trump administration's policies are being challenged and overturned in court. Americans have filed over 428 lawsuits against the administration, and judges have partially or fully blocked over 138 of Trump's executive actions. |

✅ TRUMP MAY NOT ACCESS SNAP RECIPIENTS' PRIVATE DATA — A federal judge will not allow the Trump administration to access private information about Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants currently held by state governments. |
✅ RHODE ISLAND JUDGE STOPS TRUMP ADMIN POLICIES ATTACKING FREE SPEECH — A Reagan-appointed judge blocked the Trump administration from deporting professors critical of Trump's policies, saying the effect of the administration's actions was to "chill freedom of speech." |
✅ AMICUS BRIEF TO PROTECT TEMPORARY PROTECTED STATUS (TPS) – I filed an amicus brief with the United States Supreme Court, alongside 138 of my colleagues, to defend TPS for Venezuelans in the United States fleeing political violence, poverty, and starvation. |

Making the Case to Save Health Care Across the Country |

CLICK HERE TO WATCH: Congressman Amo joins ABC news to discuss conservatives shutting down the government and how Democrats are fighting to save our health care. |

I spoke with ABC News' Linsey Davis about what led us into this shutdown and how we get out of it. Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the Presidency. Congressional leaders must come to the table to avoid a massive hike of health care costs. |
