Alleged non-citizen voting became a talking point during the 2024 elections.
However, the nonpartisan Center for Election Innovation & Research spent much of 2025 tracking state governments and their efforts across the country, and has confirmed that non-citizen voting is extremely rare and non-coordinated.
In fact, Louisiana's Republican Secretary of State Nancy Landry recently announced that a grand total of 79 possible non-citizens had voted in the state over the last 40 years. The nonpartisan Brennan Center for Justice estimates that more than 74 million votes were cast in Louisiana over that time period, making this approximately 1 out of every 1 million votes cast.
Secretary of State Landry also acknowledged that she couldn’t even be sure that those 79 were actual cases of ineligible votes being cast — some may have been incorrectly identified as a result of data errors or outdated information.
