John,

Last Sunday morning in Grand Blanc, Michigan, worshippers gathered at the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for prayer. Instead, their
sanctuary was torn apart by gunfire.

Four people were killed. Eight others were injured. Families, neighbors,
and a whole community were left reeling from a nightmare that never should
have happened.

We refuse to center the person who caused this devastation. Today, we
choose to remember the lives stolen, the families grieving, and a
community that now must carry the weight of this violence. 

A church is supposed to be a place of peace, safety, and belonging. That
was shattered in an instant.

Too many communities of faith, from synagogues, to mosques, to Black
churches, to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Michigan,
have been attacked. Gun violence fueled by hate, instability, or despair
rips holes through every part of our country.

To the people of Grand Blanc: you are not alone. We mourn with you. We
honor those who were taken. And we recommit ourselves to building a world
where no one fears gathering to pray, to learn, or to live freely.

Hold your loved ones close tonight. And please, if you are grieving, know
that your pain is seen.
