Government shutdowns are not a natural phenomenon — no matter how many lies and excuses my Republican colleagues push.
Because Donald Trump is unwilling to do the right thing for the American people, our nation is now in the middle of a devastating shutdown.
Today, I’m thinking about all the federal workers — including thousands of American service members — who are now being forced to work without any idea of when their next paycheck will come through.
Despite controlling the White House and holding majorities in both houses of Congress, my Republican colleagues have failed to do the most basic function of their jobs: Keeping the government up and running. Because of that failure, Republicans have jeopardized our national security, Social Security, veterans’ benefits, Medicaid, Medicare, and the protection of our public lands.
I flew back to Washington to find a path forward, negotiating in good faith to fund our government and lower the cost of health care for working families, but Republicans have refused to even consider a bipartisan solution to keep the government open and ensure health insurance premiums don’t skyrocket come next year.
My Republican colleagues failed to even show up to do the most basic function of our jobs. Our country deserves so much better than this.
Republicans’ refusal to act is putting real people at risk — families, seniors, and service members who depend on Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, and affordable health care. I’m not going to sit by while they gamble with people’s lives.
That’s why I’m fighting to keep our government running and protect health care for every American. So if you’re in a position to give amid all this uncertainty, I hope you’ll consider chipping in just a few dollars to help me continue this fight in Congress:
