Pushing for UN Reform:
ADL staff and volunteer leaders met with dozens of heads of state and government, as well as Ministers of Foreign Affairs during UNGA's High Level Week. In those meetings, we urged leaders to support UN Reform, specifically as related to the Special Rapporteur system to prevent officials who deploy antisemitic tropes, trivialize the Holocaust or justify violence against the Jewish state from serving under the UN’s imprimatur. We urge thorough pre-appointment vetting, stronger accountability for Code of Conduct breaches, rigorous report review and a streamlined removal process to protect the integrity of human rights work and uphold core UN values. Richard Falk and Francesca Albanese
are two salient examples of how the role of Special Rapporteur can be exploited for nefarious purposes.

Conference Speakers Promote Antisemitic, Pro-Terror Views:
At the 45th annual ArabCon in Dearborn, Michigan, several speakers engaged in the promotion of antisemitism and the defense of terrorism, including the Hamas-led terror attack against Israel on 10/7. ArabCon brings together members of the American-Arab community and others to discuss current political, social, and cultural issues. Speakers this year frequently vilified Zionism — the movement for the self-determination and statehood for the Jewish people in their ancestral homeland — and Zionists, which encompass the vast majority of Jews around the world. Simultaneously, speakers defended terrorists and extolled their actions.

MAKING PROGRESS WITH ADL

Handling Hate the Right Way:
In Michigan recently, the ADL regional office’s support was instrumental when a seventh grader was targeted at school for being Jewish. On three different occasions within a week, another student taunted him with language such as “I hate Jews” and “Shut up, Jew.” When the Jewish student’s parents reported this to the school, the principal immediately called the parents to learn more, and he noted that he and the rest of the district’s leaders had just taken ADL training on addressing antisemitism. The family praised the outcome: the principal met with the student who had made the hateful comments and he was disciplined appropriately. The principal
then followed up with the Jewish student, who felt good about the resolution and safe to wear his Star of David. We were thrilled to hear about this, and appreciate that the parents wrote in to say that “We are so grateful for the ADL during these most challenging times.”

Keep Synagogues Safe. We must act now to keep our Jewish institutions, schools and houses of worship secure. The Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) is essential for helping houses of worship and other institutions add urgently needed protection. Current funding levels are insufficient, leaving many institutions vulnerable. Congress must act now. We need at least $500 million in NSGP funding.

3 suspected members of Hamas were arrested in Berlin for allegedly procuring weapons to target Israeli and Jewish institutions in Germany. Again, Hamas, an Iranian-regime terror proxy, isn’t a threat just to Israel, but also to Jews and others worldwide.

It is tiring and heartbreaking that Jews cannot go to synagogue to pray on the holiest day of the year without facing violence and antisemitism. Enough! My heart and prayers are with the families of those whose lives were senselessly cut short, and their community who should have been safe to observe this solemn day in peace. May the lives we lost forever be a blessing.

On Yom Kippur, two people were murdered and four were seriously injured in a car-ramming and stabbing at a synagogue in Manchester, UK. This was an antisemitic terror attack. Jews were targeted — simply for being Jewish — in their place of worship during the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. As our partners @BoardofDeputies said, “this attack was sadly something we feared was coming.” Jewish people around the world are no longer surprised by such attacks. This is what happens when antisemitism is normalized. This is unacceptable. This is deadly. And this needs to stop. We send our condolences to the victims’ families and wish the injured a refuah shlema. We
stand with the British Jewish community as they continue to face a rise in antisemitism, like so many Jewish communities around the globe.
