Irving, TX – As you may know, government funding has lapsed as of Wednesday, October 1st, resulting in a shutdown of some federal government services. I remain committed to working to find a path forward. Our offices in Addison and Washington, D.C., will remain open and available to help you or answer any questions you may have.
House Republicans did our job to pass a clean, and simple temporary spending bill to keep the government open. When Biden was President, Democrats demanded that Congress pass clean spending bills, and that’s what we did to keep the government operating. But now, Democrats refused to vote for a clean, temporary spending bill, causing the government shutdown.
Democrats have completely broken with how they have acted in the past. The non-partisan House bill is the same short-term funding extension that virtually all Democrats voted to pass 13 times during the Biden Administration to keep the government open.
Rather than pass a clean, non-partisan temporary funding bill as they have done in the past, Senate Democrats insisted on adding massive new spending. In this bill, on page 57, Section 2141, Democrats are demanding taxpayer-funded healthcare benefits for illegal aliens. Their long list of demands would cost the U.S. taxpayers an additional $1.5 trillion, including hundreds of billions of dollars for illegal immigrant healthcare paid for by Americans, which is completely unacceptable.
Here are some immediate impacts of the Democrat shutdown and the pain Democrats are causing the American people
- 1.3 million active duty troops will now be working without pay
- Tele-health services for seniors on Medicaid will stop
- Nearly 50,000 members of the U.S. Coast Guard will not be paid
- Over 13,000 air traffic controllers will work without pay & TSA agents will work without pay
- Pay will stop for over 100,000 federal law enforcement officers
The impact this shutdown will have on the families of Texas-24 is not lost on me. I have compiled some information below regarding several of the government services that matter most to you.
Social Security and Medicare will be largely unaffected because they are considered mandatory spending. Checks will continue to go out, and seniors who rely on Medicare can also expect those services to continue.
Food Assistance Programs: Nutrition safety net programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Child Nutrition (CN) programs, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), will continue until funding from the previous appropriation is exhausted, which could occur as early as next week.
Veterans Affairs: All functions within Veterans Health Administration (VHA) will continue. There will be no impact on Veteran healthcare, and the VA will continue to process and deliver all benefits to Veterans – including compensation, pension, education, and housing benefits.
