Happy Hispanic Heritage Month,
John! I’m so proud to be deeply rooted in a
community with such a long history of organizing, and of standing up for
each other in the face of injustices and exclusions.
As I think of our struggles, I’m thinking of the way in which they are
interconnected to struggles many other communities face around the world
too, and specifically thinking of the Palestinian people as they seek
freedom, safety, and peace.
I know it can feel hard to celebrate during times like these. We open up
our phones, scroll on our timelines, or read the news and are faced with
headline after headline of the torture, cruelty, and dehumanization our
people are facing every single day.
But all of my readings on abolition, resistance, and revolutionary
movements have taught me that part of advocacy is preserving moments of
peace, joy, and celebration.
Despite the ICE raids continuously terrorizing our working-class
neighborhoods.
Despite the threats of abduction and detention many of our neighbors are
under.
Despite the cruelty and chaos the Trump administration seems determined to
inflict on us.
Despite it all, we show up to celebrate each other. That’s what gives me
the strength to keep fighting for a better Los Angeles and a better world.

odds are stacked against a Chicana woman like me, but we need more people
who not ONLY look like us, but will fight FOR US in office.

Los Angeles is a city that is ⅓ immigrant, and ⅙ likely undocumented. So
many of my fellow Angelenos are facing the fear and pain that I was when
my dad was deported when I was just 15. This isn’t politics for me, it’s
personal.
Angelenos deserve someone who will show up in times of struggle,
displacement, and fear. Not just when the cameras are out. My promise to
you, John: I’ll never take
your support for granted. I’ll never forget my roots. I’ll never turn my
back on this community.
