John,
Trump allies are trying to pressure an independent government board—the Election Assistance Commission (EAC)—into enacting a new voter suppression policy. The proposal comes from America First Legal, a right-wing organization founded by MAGA extremist Stephen Miller.
The proposal would force Americans to show specific, costly, hard-to-access documents like passports before registering to vote. An estimated 21 million Americans could be disenfranchised, particularly rural Americans, students, women, and communities of color.
This is an attempt to subvert our democracy by suppressing the vote. We need to make it clear that we won’t accept any policy restricting our constitutional right to vote.
Right now, the EAC is taking public comments to gather input on whether they should adopt this anti-voter initiative. They need to hear from our movement about how damaging this policy would be before they make their decision.
Please take a minute to leave your comment and speak out against this proposed barrier to voter registration. [[link removed]] You can use the template below — or personalize it (that helps!):
This rule change would require Americans to present specific, expensive government documents like passports to register to vote. It's being sold as "election security," but it’s a trick. Eligible voters are already required to attest to their citizenship when registering to vote, and there are plenty of safeguards already in place to make sure that only eligible voters register and vote. An estimated 21 million citizens lack ready access to the documents that this rule change would require them to produce. The rule creates unnecessary barriers to voting and will particularly burden eligible voters from rural communities, women who have changed their last name, and voters from working families. I oppose this rule change. It won't improve election security, but it will prevent eligible Americans from exercising their constitutional right to vote.
Defend our democracy: Tell the EAC not to require Americans to show costly documents before registering to vote. [[link removed]]
