Friends, when I go to the Senate floor to represent the people of Massachusetts, I fight for all of my constituents, not just those who voted for me.

Donald Trump doesn’t see it that way.

He’s happy to use this government shutdown as an excuse to exact revenge on voters in states that didn’t vote for him in last year’s election. Just look at what his budget chief openly admitted on day one of the shutdown:

'Tweet from Trump's budget director'

Friend — I fought tooth and nail for funding to invest in green energy projects across the country. They have been a smashing success. They’re being cancelled not because it’s good policy, but because this administration wants to hurt states with Democratic voters.

But what Trump doesn’t understand is that these budget cuts don’t discriminate. Green energy projects employ Democrats, Republicans, and Independents across the country. They help power both the electric grids and the economies of many communities that voted for him, too. Even in “blue states” like Massachusetts.

The same goes for their healthcare cuts. The nearly $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts that Republicans want us to rubber-stamp will devastate rural hospitals, many of which are in red districts and red states. Low-income families will lose their healthcare coverage, and it doesn’t matter if they had a Trump sign or Harris sign on their lawn last November.

This is one of the major differences between Democrats and Republicans: Democrats want everyone, no matter what party they vote for, to be able to afford a good life. We want everyone to have the healthcare they deserve as a human right. We see it as a responsibility of the government to serve all people, not just those who are on our “team.”

It’s disgusting and inexcusable that Trump is using the power of the federal government to go after his enemies, from budget cuts to DOJ investigations to mass firings. It’s all the more reason to stand strong on our demands to protect the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid.

We can’t back down now, when the American people need us to deliver.

In solidarity,

Ed Markey

Despite this government shutdown, we still have a campaign to run and a race to win. We recently learned that a credible challenger will be stepping into this race. We know times are tough right now for those impacted by the shutdown. If you can afford to give today, please consider chipping in $5 or whatever you can to power Ed Markey’s work in the Senate and his campaign for reelection.
