Our government is shut down — but ICE is still on the job.
While programs that feed families and fund healthcare have been ground to a halt, armed federal agents are still patrolling our neighborhoods. Deportations have been deemed “essential work” by the Trump administration.
Let that sink in.
➡️ Not Medicaid.
➡️ Not SNAP.
➡️ Not tax credits that help working families get by.
❌ None of those are “essential.”
But ICE? Deporting people, intimidating families, and terrorizing our communities? Republicans decided that’s essential.
This shutdown isn’t about us. It’s about their priorities. They chose not to fund healthcare, housing, and food programs — but to instead keep funneling billions into an agency whose mission is fear and cruelty.
This is a policy decision. A moral decision. And it exposes the truth: Republicans don’t want a government that works for the people — they want a government that furthers an authoritarian and racist agenda.
We cannot allow Republicans to redefine their bigotry and racism as “essential.” What’s truly essential is ensuring that families have dignity, safety, and the basic resources they need to survive. This is the agenda I will continue to fight for.
In Solidarity,
