Hello John,
I’m sure you’ve seen the back-and-forth between Republicans and Democrats over
health care and the funding bill to keep the government open.
Republicans claim Democrats want to provide health care to illegal immigrants,
but Democrats insist that isn’t true, noting they cannot qualify for Medicaid.
So, who’s right? Do Democrats really want to give Medicaid to illegal
immigrants?
In short, yes, they do.
👉 Let’s look at the facts.
The Working Families Tax Cuts, signed into law in July by President Trump,
contained several Medicaid reform provisions that are serious, necessary steps
to address a program plagued by fraud and inefficiencies, where taxpayer
dollars are being wasted on individuals who aren’t even eligible.
Here’s what the new law actually does:
* It imposes work requirements on Medicaid enrollees similar to those for
other welfare programs, and it requires states to do a better job of ensuring
that those in the program are actually eligible.
* It also prevents hospitals and state governments from colluding to rip off
federal taxpayers with kickback financing schemes like provider taxes that
states (like California) have used in the past to indirectly fund Medicaid
coverage for unauthorized immigrants.
In exchange for supporting a government funding bill, the Democrats are
demanding that all the health care provisions just discussed be repealed. That
would mean states could again expand Medicaid coverage to noncitizens using
fungible federal dollars.
Back in June, the Congressional Budget Office found that the working-class tax
law would remove 1.4 million undocumented immigrants from Medicaid. Repealing
those provisions would allow them to stay on.
So, yes, Democrats are for allowing illegal immigrants to access Medicaid.
👉 Now let’s turn to the other demand the Democrats have for keeping the
government open.
They want to make permanent the Obamacare subsidy add-ons that were enacted to
help Americans get through the Covid pandemic. These inflated Obamacare
subsidies are set to expire at the end of the year.
I recently had an op-ed published in The Hill on this very topic, which
explains in detail why this is a bad idea. You can read ithere
<[link removed]>.
In a nutshell, this is the program that Democrats and big insurance companies
are willing to shut down the government to extend:
* The program was supposed to be a temporary Covid measure (the pandemic is
over)
* It costs $400 billion more than the pre-Covid subsidies
* Every penny of it goes straight to a health insurance company
* It wastes taxpayer money on upper-income families who don’t need the help
* It created millions of phantom Obamacare enrollees who had no claims — many
may not even exist, thanks to fraudsters — and yet insurance companies still
got tens of billions of your tax dollars
We will make a major effort to stop this Biden-era taxpayer rip-off, and we’d
like your help.
