John,

As of Wednesday at midnight, the federal government shut down. Let’s be clear: this is a man-made disaster. Not a natural crisis, but a political one, orchestrated by Donald Trump and his Republican allies in Congress, including seven right here in New York.

After passing their reckless "Big Ugly Bill" this summer and gutting health care for 1.5 million New Yorkers, Republicans had another chance to stand up to protect millions of Americans' health care. They chose to shut down the Government instead. They chose chaos over solutions. As a result, they abandoned 2.8 million New Yorkers who rely on SNAP, 442,000 women and children who depend on WIC, and the over 100,000 federal workers in our state who now are furloughed or at risk of being furloughed and living without a paycheck. So, I’m calling on our Republican Representatives now: stand up to Trump. Put your constituents first. End this shutdown.

Keeping New Yorkers Safe. We made enormous progress on subway safety this summer, following historic state investments to keep riders safe. Crime was down nearly 10% compared to last year and down 16.8% versus 2019. Felony assaults specially were down in each of June, July, and August – all while ridership increased 9% to 311 million.
