Plus, our most read story this week

This week was an emotional one at National Geographic, as one of our community’s legends, Dr. Jane Goodall, passed away. "Dr. Jane Goodall brought so much light into this world, demonstrating beautifully what one person can achieve,” said Jill Tiefenthaler, CEO of National Geographic Society. “To know Jane was to know an extraordinary scientist, conservationist, humanitarian, educator, mentor and, perhaps most profoundly, an enduring champion for hope.” Our photo essay featuring our most iconic photos of Goodall and her work was among our most-read stories, and a touching tribute to her legacy. Other stories our readers loved this week included a look at a provocative new book about the Virgin Mary, less-crowded fall foliage destinations, and a surprising change in how we should be thinking about sleep.
