New Democrat Coalition Leadership issued a statement on the Republican shutdown that leaves millions of Americans with rising healthcare costs. New Dem Leadership previously released a statement ([link removed]) opposing the Republicans’ partisan budget proposal.

“President Trump and Congressional Republicans just purposefully shut the government down – putting our economy, security, and critical government services at risk. They did so simply to protect their cruel healthcare cuts and make it harder for working people to afford their everyday needs.

“Republicans have full control of the House, Senate, and White House. While Democrats stayed in Washington to seek a solution, Republicans took an extended vacation at home. This shutdown could have easily been averted, and the responsibility for it lies solely on President Trump and the Republicans’ shoulders.

“There is still a way out of this mess. We call on Congressional Republicans to come back to D.C., put the American people over their extreme agenda, and negotiate in good faith a bipartisan budget that lowers costs and prevents a full-blown healthcare crisis. New Dems remain ready and willing to seek common ground to reopen the government while lowering costs and protecting health care for the American people.”

On Tuesday, ahead of the government shutdown, New Democrat Coalition Chair Brad Schneider delivered remarks at a press conference with his fellow House Democratic Caucus Chairs.

While Republicans were missing in action as the government shut down on their watch, New Dems were in Washington ready to negotiate a bipartisan budget that kept the government open, lowered the high cost of living, and protected the health care of millions of working Americans from cruel Republican cuts.

Chair Schneider appeared alongside Chairs of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), Democratic Women’s Coalition (DWC), Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC), and Congressional Equality Caucus (CEC).
