This month in conservation…
Film festivals, data centers, membership, No Kings
[link removed]

Hi John,

We have exciting news to share! Our mini-documentary "A Seething Underneath: Water Contamination in Wisconsin" will be screening in two upcoming film festivals. This video features Shy McElroy, Tarion O'Carroll, Lisa Anderson, and Mary Dougherty – people around Wisconsin impacted by water contamination, from nitrate to lead.

Consider joining us at one of these two film festivals in the next couple of weeks:
The Basin Short Film Festival [[link removed]] in Stevens Point, WI on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 6:30 pm.
The Fresh Coast Film Festival [[link removed]] in Marquette, MI on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 10 a.m. and Sunday, Oct. 19 at 10 a.m.

We have been working alongside communities impacted by contaminated drinking water for years. Because of their stories, and your support and advocacy, we have enacted water standards [[link removed]] and successfully allocated major funding [[link removed]] to address this issue.

But our work is far from over. Communities are still suffering from unsafe water.

The next step is passing legislation that protects private well owners. Approximately one-third of Wisconsinites rely on groundwater from private wells for their drinking water. Without regular testing, required notifications, or state support, thousands of families remain unaware of the risks in their drinking water. With your support, we’re working to change that. Telling stories is how we move people and reach our elected officials. Highlighting how these issues affect the people in our communities is how we make change. Make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel to follow our stories [[link removed]]and please reach out to me at [email protected] if you have a story idea.

Data centers are threatening our health and pocket books

More and more data centers are being proposed in Wisconsin, threatening our Great Lakes, our health, and our pocket books. There are currently 47 data centers in the state with more being proposed [[link removed]].

These data centers, built to power AI and cloud computing, use an unprecedented amount of energy to run the facilities and use millions of gallons of water a day to cool them. The country's increased demand for electricity from data centers has tripled over the last decade [[link removed]] and is projected to double or even triple again by 2028.

The major problem is that utility companies are building more fossil fuel power plants to meet this new energy demand while making everyday ratepayers like us pay for it. Utilities have already requested $29 billion [[link removed]] in rate hikes this year!

We need to build out our electrical grid with clean energy because it’s healthier for everyone and it’s cheaper. We’re working on state legislation that will address these concerns. Check our emails and we’ll keep you in the loop!

A renewed energy at Green Tie Madison

Our Green Tie Madison event in September was a night of profound celebration and love. The crowd brought a new energy and gave standing ovations for each of our awardees. If you missed it, make sure to check out the videos we featured of each of our awardees and be inspired! We’re grateful to be in this work with all of you.

Co-hosting a climate storytelling workshop in Milwaukee

Our Communications Manager Erin Bloodgood will be co-leading a four-part climate storytelling workshop with the City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee Health Department, ExFabula, and Citizen Action of Wisconsin.

Participants from Milwaukee will learn how to craft their story based on their climate concerns and form their story into testimony when talking with their elected officials. The series will end with a live story showcase on Nov. 20. We’re excited to participate in this workshop and help people discover the power of storytelling.
