One of the four hens Zoe rescued from Perdue's Petaluma Poultry slaughterhouse at an animal sanctuary where she is now healthy and safe.
Hi John,
After seven days of jury selection, we finally have a jury in the Perdue Rescue Trial. The five women and seven men on this jury are tasked with deciding whether to convict animal rescuer Zoe Rosenberg for saving the lives of four chickens.
Over 300 potential jurors were summoned to the jury pool, significantly more than the usual number, due to the amount of publicity this case has generated. Multiple potential jurors expressed compassion for animals, and unsurprisingly, the prosecution was quick to use their strikes to remove these jurors. One juror said he would consider the chickens' perspective. The prosecution excused him. They also used a strike to cut a woman who said she is not vegetarian but ideally, she would be.
Opening statements will be this Monday, October 6th. The prosecutors will try to paint Zoe as a scary criminal. The defense will explain that *this case is not a "Whodunit" but a "Whydunit."* Zoe openly shared footage from the rescue online. She is not denying that she took Poppy, Ivy, Aster, and Azalea to get veterinary care. She wants the world to hear their story and understand why she was compelled to act.
Things should start moving more quickly next week once testimony begins. To stay updated as this historic trial unfolds, follow the Perdue Trial X account ( [link removed] ) , our Court Watch blog ( [link removed] ) , or UnchainedTV ( [link removed] ) for the latest news.
Thank you,
Cassie
PS:?Earlier this week, we saw a huge step forward ( [link removed] ) in the campaign?to shut down beagle breeder Ridglan Farms! Wisconsin's Veterinary Examining Board voted unanimously to suspend the license of Ridglan's primary veterinarian after it came to light that he was instructing employees at Ridglan to perform painful surgeries on dogs without proper anesthesia or training. Watch some of the TV news coverage here. The special prosecutor's investigation into Ridglan is ongoing.
