Vol. 119, Issue #16

Dear Friends/Amigos,

Every year, Congress must pass funding bills to keep the government working for the people. That’s why I supported a clean measure to extend funding until November 21, giving us time to finish our work without hurting Americans.

It was the same type of resolution Democrats supported earlier this year. But this time, Senate Democrats blocked it and forced a shutdown, leaving our troops, families, and small businesses facing needless uncertainty.

House Republicans chose stability and responsibility. Senate Democrats chose chaos. I will keep fighting to put people over politics and keep our government open.

In the meantime, my office remains open to help with any federal agency case. While some agencies may not respond until funding is restored, my team and I will continue working for you every single day.

Sincerely/Atentamente,

María E. Salazar

Protecting Places of Worship: The Pray Safe Act

This week, I joined Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-NY) and U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) to reintroduce the bipartisan, bicameral Pray Safe Act.

This important legislation creates a federal clearinghouse to give faith-based organizations, houses of worship, and nonprofits a one-stop resource for safety and security best practices, federal security grant programs, and training opportunities.

The freedom to practice one’s religion is a core American value, and every person deserves to feel safe in their place of worship. That’s why I am proud to co-lead this bill to help protect churches, synagogues, mosques, and other religious institutions, here in Miami and across the country.

Turning Vacant Buildings Into Affordable Homes

I introduced the bipartisan, budget-neutral Revitalizing Empty Structures Into Desirable Environments (RESIDE) Act, which would create a pilot program to help local communities transform vacant buildings into affordable housing.

For generations, homeownership has been a cornerstone of the American Dream. But here in Miami, that dream is slipping further out of reach, especially for young people and working families.

The RESIDE Act is a commonsense solution to increase housing supply, revitalize neighborhoods, and make homeownership more attainable for those who need it most. By putting unused buildings back into productive use, we can strengthen our communities while giving more families the chance to achieve the dream of owning a home.

Standing Up for Small Businesses: The Flight Refund Fairness Act

This week, I joined Reps. Dina Titus (D-NV) and Mark Alford (R-MO) to reintroduce the bipartisan Flight Refund Fairness Act. This bill fixes an unfair federal policy that forces small travel agencies, not airlines, to cover the cost of flight refunds when cancellations occur.

As one of the world’s busiest tourist destinations, Miami depends on a strong and fair travel industry. When flights are canceled, it should be the airlines, not our small travel advisors, who are responsible for refunds.

The Flight Refund Fairness Act is a commonsense, bipartisan solution that protects local travel businesses from costly and unfair burdens, while ensuring consumers get their refunds faster. I’m proud to stand up for the small businesses that power Miami’s tourism economy and keep it thriving.
