Plenary | Eurogroup President | Energy









Brussels faces a busy week ahead, with the election of a new Eurogroup President and an intense 3-day plenary session and committee meetings during which MEPs will tackle a number of issues, including the rights of persons with intellectual disabilities in the COVID-19 crisis as well as a comprehensive European approach to energy storage. Meanwhile, the European Commission is expected to launch two proposals related to renewable energies.



The second round of the Polish presidential elections will take place on Sunday.

This week, the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI) will vote on an opinion on how to finance the Green Deal, while the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) will hold a public hearing on the geopolitical implications of the COVID-19 crisis. The plenary session starting on Wednesday will give MEPs a chance to discuss and vote on multiple texts, including the humanitarian situation in Venezuela. Parliament will also be briefed on the programme of the German Presidency, as well as the EU’s public health strategy post-COVID-19 and the situation in the Mediterranean.

This week, the College will present the Hydrogen Strategy, which foresees the use of clean hydrogen, produced from renewable electricity, to help reduce the EU economy's carbon emissions in a cost-effective way. Renewable hydrogen has been receiving increasing support, as it can provide the mobility sector with emission-free energy. Moreover, the Commission will launch a new strategy for energy system integration, which aims to better link the different energy sectors in the EU to help them reduce carbon emissions.

On Thursday, the Eurogroup will elect its new President who will replace Mário Centeno, Minister of Finance of Portugal. Furthermore, justice ministers will discuss the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, paying particular attention to democratic resilience in Europe, the rule of law and disinformation.
