This week, we returned to court in Kansas to challenge abortion restrictions that delay care, invade patients’ privacy, and force providers to share false and dangerous information.

The Center has been fighting for abortion rights in Kansas for over 10 years. Here's the timeline of this fight:

  • 2015: We filed a case in Kansas state court on behalf of abortion providers, arguing that the Kansas Constitution protects personal autonomy, including the right to abortion.
  • 2019: The Kansas Supreme Court agreed. In a landmark ruling—secured by the Center—the court recognized that the state constitution protects the fundamental right to personal autonomy, including the right to abortion, making Kansas a beacon for reproductive freedom even before Roe v. Wade fell.
  • 2022: Kansas voters reaffirmed those protections by overwhelmingly rejecting an anti-abortion ballot measure that would have rescinded state constitutional protection for the right to abortion.
  • 2023: We filed Hodes & Nauser v. Kobach and a few months later, a Kansas court blocked the onerous laws—including government-scripted misinformation and arbitrary waiting periods—after our lawsuit demonstrated the harms they cause.
  • Now: The state is back in court defending these laws, and we are fighting to ensure they remain blocked. This trial is the next major test to protect those hard-won rights from being hollowed out by harmful restrictions.

Your partnership makes long fights like this one possible. With you by our side, we can keep fighting—and winning—against restrictions that deny people the ability to make decisions about their own bodies and futures.
