 Dear Neighbors,
To say this week was challenging is an understatement. Rest assured, my DFL colleagues and I are working hard to ensure we can mitigate the harm and cruelty coming from Washington and its impact on Minnesotans.
Despite all the troubling news, I wanted to take a moment to spotlight a special story of unity, resilience, and redemption.
In 2023, I was proud to have championed Minnesota’s Clean Slate Law—a bipartisan effort that removes barriers for people who have served their time and are ready to move forward.
Since the law's implementation, Minnesotans are already benefiting from it. By streamlining the expungement process for non-violent offenses, it offers real hope and opportunity to those who have rebuilt their lives and are eager to contribute to our communities.
I’m especially honored to uplift the story of my high school friend and community member, Farhia Budul, who was recently granted a pardon. Farhia is a recovery advocate and mental health professional who turned her own struggle into a mission of service. Her life is a testament to the power of redemption and the importance of second chances.
Farhia’s story is exactly why this work matters. It shows us that when we invest in people—not just punish them—we all win. Her success is a victory not only for her and her family, but for our entire community.
The Clean Slate Law is rooted in the belief that no one should be defined by their worst mistake for the rest of their life. It’s about restoring dignity, unlocking potential, and building safer, more equitable communities across Minnesota.
When our neighbors, friends, and loved ones are free to live up to their full potential—we all rise. Farhia, I am proud of you and all your accomplishments. May you continue making a positive impact for our community and state.
Thank you for electing me to represent the beautiful district of 65A.
Sincerely,
Rep. Samakab Hussein Minnesota House of Representatives – District 65A Vice Chair, Legacy Finance Committee Member, Housing Finance & Policy; Labor & Workforce Development Saint Paul, MN
