Families are already getting letters in the mail. Their health care premiums are about to double, and it’s because of the Republican budget cuts passed earlier this year.
Those cuts eliminated the enhanced tax credits that made health care affordable for more than 24 million people who don’t get insurance through their job or another government program. That’s farmers, small business owners, gig workers, retirees not yet eligible for Medicare – people who work hard every day but can’t afford skyrocketing premiums.
Without restored funding, millions will face impossible choices:
- Pay twice as much each month for the same coverage.
- Switch to plans with massive deductibles.
- Change jobs just to get insurance.
- Lose their health care altogether.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates that 4 million people will become uninsured if this funding isn’t restored. And with open enrollment starting on November 1, families are already panicking. As Sen. Patty Murray warned: “Later is too late.”
This is a manufactured crisis. Republicans have once again decided that tax cuts for billionaires matter more than health care for working families. But the Senate can still act.
