October Chapter Updates

Hi John,

Welcome to October! We have a few chapter updates that we'd like to share:

  • New Executive Committee and Bylaw Changes
  • Ellwood Plant Identification Walk
  • Rally for County Health and Social Services Workers

New Executive Committee and Bylaw Changes

At the annual general meeting this previous Saturday, a new Executive Committee (formerly known as the Steering Committee) was elected. The committee consists of:

  • Nicole I: Co-Chair
  • Ian F: Co-Chair
  • Bryndan C: Secretary
  • Andrew H: Treasurer
  • Andrew C: Communications Secretary
  • Emily P: Outreach Coordinator
  • Alicia E: At-Large

In addition, we voted to adopt changes to the chapter bylaws including compliance-related changes, to change the makeup of the Executive Committee, and to introduce a system of committee and working group charters. The bylaw changes require one more vote to be adopted, which will take place at our November Chapter Meeting. Copies of the meeting minutes and bylaw changes will be emailed to all members in good standing.

Ellwood Plant Identification Walk

Our next social hang out is this Sunday, October 5th at 4:30 pm for a Plant ID walk led by our own Nicole I! We’re meeting at Ellwood Mesa Open Space & Sperling Preserve (7729 Hollister Ave, Goleta, CA 93117)
We’ll meet in the parking lot across from the Ellwood School at and take off through the mesa. As we hike along the coast, we’ll learn about the plants we see along the way (medicinal herbs as well as toxic plants), including some critically at-risk species. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring water. You may also want to wear a hat and sunscreen. This is an easy hike, about 2.5-3 miles in length. Afterwards, whoever wants to join is welcome to hang out with us at Finney’s Crafthouse (just down the street in the Camino real plaza) for conversation, food, and drinks!

Rally for County Health and Social Services Workers

The repercussions of Trump's "One Big Bullshit Bill" and monstrous immigration policies are manifesting locally in the form of sweeping planned layoffs at Santa Barbara County Health and Social Services Departments. While other counties in California are fighting back against federal directives to halt services to undocumented people, Santa Barbara County is cowardly shedding some 7,500 patients from public health clinics, leading to a major loss of insurance billing revenue and hence a loss of worker positions. But SEIU Locals 620 and 721, which represent the largest proportion of county workers, are planning to fight any layoffs at every step of the way, and the public's input matters a lot. The unions are planning a rally at this Tuesday's (10/7) Board of Supervisors meeting, when the layoff plans are first slated to go before the board. If at all possible, please come to the County Administration Building (105 E Anapamu St) in downtown SB at 8:30 AM on Tuesday, October 7.

We hope to see you our there in the coming week!

In solidarity,

DSA-SB Executive Committee
