Good morning!

I have been busy on the road again this week, exploring the agricultural industry in Southern MN. I look forward to spending time back home this weekend though, and I hope you have been able to enjoy the beautiful weather outside recently.

Federal Shutdown

The federal government has entered a shutdown that could have been avoided if Congress had come together around a clean funding bill to keep essential services operating. Unfortunately, Democrats refused to set aside their spending demands, and that decision has brought us to this point. As a result, families, communities, and public servants are left facing unnecessary uncertainty and disruption. Shutting down the government should never be used as a bargaining tactic, and this outcome underscores the need for responsible leadership. My hope is that Democrats will reconsider their position, set politics aside, and work in good faith with Republicans to find common ground so we can quickly and responsibly reopen the government.

Title IX Investigation

Also this week, federal officials that both the Minnesota Department of Education and the Minnesota State High School League violated Title IX with their policy on transgender athletes. According to the U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services, the state allowed male athletes to compete on several girls’ teams, which they found to be out of compliance with federal law. The agencies have given MDE and MSHSL 10 days to revise their guidance and policies to align with Title IX or face enforcement action. Hypothetically, this could be an important step forward for female athletes across Minnesota, ensuring fairness in competition while also protecting the federal funding that our schools depend on.

Opportunities in St. Paul

*High School Page Program*
The Minnesota House of Representatives High School Page Program [ [link removed] ] gives juniors the chance to spend a week at the Capitol learning about the legislative process. Students meet with legislators, observe committee hearings and floor sessions, and gain firsthand experience with how ideas become law. Applications for the upcoming session are now open, and I encourage interested students to apply.

*Undergraduate Internship Program*
College students can also get involved through the Minnesota House Undergraduate Internship Program [ [link removed] ]. Interns work directly with legislative offices, assist with research and communications, and learn how policy decisions are made. This program provides valuable experience for students interested in government, law, or public service. Applications are also open now, and I encourage students to consider applying.

As students are settling into the rhythm of the school year, this is a great opportunity to consider and look forward to for the spring semester.
