Chris is working to re-open the government immediately — but Republicans would rather play games.
Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans got what they wanted: a government shutdown that hurts working people and treats public servants — including our military service members — like political pawns in their game.
Here’s the deal:
- Democrats offered a serious plan to fund the government, protect Medicaid, and extend Affordable Care Act subsidies, which nearly 50,000 Granite Staters rely on. Without action, they’ll expire in a few months — and families will see their premiums double.
- Trump agreed to work toward a deal and then walked away from negotiations and called affordable healthcare “ridiculous.”
- Speaker Johnson followed Trump’s lead, ramming through a MAGA bill that kicks people off their insurance and raises costs. Then, he cancelled all remaining House workdays days before the funding deadline — making it impossible to pass a compromise and keep the government open.
It also stopped the House from voting on the bill Chris helped introduce to pay our military throughout the shutdown. So now our military service members — as well as law enforcement officers, park rangers, and thousands of other public servants — are working without pay, unsure how they’ll pay their bills or afford groceries.
Meanwhile the very same people withholding their paychecks? Getting paid — and refusing to do their jobs.
Democrats remain ready to pass a bipartisan deal right now that will fund the government, pay the people who serve our country, and protect affordable health care. But Republicans would rather play games — Trump even said he wants to use the shutdown to fire more federal workers and make layoffs permanent — turning working families into his bargaining chips.
That’s not leadership — that’s wrong. And Chris refuses to play that game. That’s why he is refusing his pay alongside other federal workers until the government reopens.
We need leaders who put people over politics and work across the aisle to get things done. That’s what Chris has done in the House — and how he’ll serve in the Senate.
