Interim Update - Special Session

________________________________________________________________________

Friends,

Governor Walz has announced his intent to call a special session beginning October 6th. While he alone holds the authority to call us back, once the Legislature convenes it will be lawmakers who decide which bills move forward. To date, there is no bipartisan framework in place, which means any legislation will need to go through the committee process and earn broad support before it reaches the House or Senate floor.

House Republicans have already offered a constructive path forward. Our focus is on measures that can pass with bipartisan support and actually deliver results for Minnesotans. That includes giving schools more flexibility and resources to improve safety, making sure mental health care is accessible to those in crisis, and ensuring repeat violent offenders face real consequences. These are practical solutions that address the concerns we hear from families and communities across the state.

Unfortunately, instead of working collaboratively, the Governor continues to float vague and partisan proposals that have not even been vetted in committee. That is not serious governing. Minnesotans deserve a transparent process where they can see what is in a bill before their elected representatives are asked to vote on it.

If a special session is ultimately called, I will be there ready to do the work. My focus will remain on keeping our schools safe, improving access to care, and holding criminals accountable. Anything less falls short of the results Minnesotans deserve.
