Billionaires who want to buy our democracy are quietly moving a case that has been dubbed “Citizens United 2.0” — designed to eviscerate some of the last remaining safeguards in our campaign finance laws.
John, we want you to know: We’re fighting back.
If you’re already familiar with this case and The Montana Plan to curb corporate influence in our democracy, you can help keep our fight going strong here:
The mask is off.
The case, National Republican Senatorial Committee et al. v. Federal Election Commission, would tear down the firewall that limits how much parties can spend in direct coordination with their chosen candidates.
Right now, billionaires can already give massive checks to party committees — but those dollars can’t all be spent in lockstep with candidates. If the NRSC wins, that safeguard disappears. Parties could funnel unlimited sums from the richest Americans into candidate campaigns.
That would mean an unprecedented torrent of billionaire money shaping our elections — not just through Super PACs, but right alongside the candidates themselves.
If our elections become auctions, our democracy becomes an oligarchy.
That is why we’re fighting back with a bold new legal strategy. It starts with our ballot initiative called The Montana Plan, which would stop corporations from being able to spend in politics.
We’re going to knock every door we can in Montana and get this constitutional initiative on the ballot. Passing The Montana Plan will create a blueprint for every other state to make Citizens United irrelevant — and protect us from cases like this.
Will you join our fight to overcome Citizens United and protect our democracy by chipping in $17 (our average contribution) or any other amount today?
Thank you for helping us make our elections of the people, by the people, and for the people, not just the billionaires, by standing with us.
Transparent Election Initiative
