Politics in a Nutshell

Many services grind to a halt as federal government shuts down : NPR

The government shutdown is officially in effect. Rather than work with Democrats to preserve Iowans’ healthcare, Republicans have decided that making hundreds of thousands of federal workers go without pay is a better option.

What ACA subsidy expiration means for Iowa families as shutdown looms

While Iowa Republicans refuse to come up with a spending plan that won't raise healthcare prices, Iowans are speaking up about what their ACA plans and Medicaid means to them. Farmers like Nick Larson use the ACA to keep their families healthy.

Note From the Chair

Hey folks! Rita Hart here.

The shutdown is official. Republicans have made it clear that they’d rather raise health insurance costs than negotiate with Democrats to pass a bipartisan funding bill.

The main divide is over the Affordable Care Act tax credits. The Republicans’ plan would allow them to expire, a move that would spike the price of the health care premiums for millions of Americans across the nation. Many will lose their coverage entirely. The Democrats are fighting to keep these credits in the bill, while Iowa’s Republican Representatives have fled D.C.

Our healthcare is on the line, and Democrats are fighting for it every step of the way. If you or your family could be impacted by rising ACA rates, tell us your story here: Storyteller Sign-Up Form

Iowa Republicans are leaving working folks in the dust. It is getting harder and harder to make ends meet and Republicans are not doing anything to lower costs. Iowans deserve better. We need to elect leaders who will step up and make sure working families are getting the necessary medical care that allows them to live healthy lives. Sincerely,

Rita Hart
