Litter Stomp! 

Litter Stomp is less than two weeks away, and you still have time to register! Join us on Saturday, October 11 as we promote litter source control and community pride!

Sign up as an individual or come with a group and help remove litter from areas in your community. Volunteers are welcome to choose their own location or can choose from one of the five preselected hub locations listed below:

Registered volunteers can pick up their free litter cleanup supplies prior to event day on Friday, October 10. Check your email for supply pick up information. *We are also collecting scrap tires! *

As part of this year’s Litter Stomp event, Environmental Services will accept scrap tires to further efforts to combat illegal dumping.

Bring scrap tires to the *East Regional Public Library*, located at *6301 Bridge St., Fort Worth, 76112*, between *8 – 11 a.m*. on event day.


* Tires from passenger vehicles, motorcycles, and bicycles are accepted.
* Rims accepted but must be removed from the tire.
* Commercial tires will not be accepted.

Another Successful Litter
Cleanup is in the Books!

On September 13, 61 volunteers brought serious energy to the Ash Crescent community, and the results were amazing! In just four hours, volunteers filled 130 trash bags and collected 6,890 pounds of litter from Cobb Park.

To add to the fun, all participants of this special event litter cleanup were entered into a drawing, and one lucky volunteer won a litter-themed prize of appreciation.

Fun Recycling Activities for School Green Teams

America Recycles Day is coming up on *November 15*! This is a great time for your School Green Team to celebrate recycling and earn points toward the *School Green Team of the Year* competition.

Recycling isn’t just about putting things in the right bin. It’s about teaching others to think differently about waste and working together to make a difference.

Your team can earn points with fun and creative activities like:


* *Recycle Bin Signs (25 points):* Make bright, colorful signs to remind students what goes in each bin.
* *America Recycles Day Event (50 points):* Plan an event with displays, games, or activities to teach about recycling.
* *Recycle Art Show (25 points):* Create and show off art made from recycled materials.
* *Rethinking Waste Fort Worth Game (25 points): *Play this fun game with your classmates.
* *No Waste Snack Zone (25 points):* Encourage snacks with less packaging and reduce trash.
* *Trashion Fashion Show (100 points):* Design outfits from recycled materials! The runway show will take place after the *Cowtown Great American Cleanup on March 22, 2026*. Start working on your looks now!

Recycling Myth #3: “It will get sorted anyway.”

Myth Busted! Myth: "If it does not belong in the recycling cart, it will get sorted anyway." Items that do not belong in the recycling cart are often referred to as wishcycled items, which is the act of trying to recycle items that cannot be recycled in Fort Worth.

While it's commendable to recycle with good intentions, wishcycling can create significant problems in the recycling process, resulting in increased waste. Mixed recycling products, such as dog food bags or glittery paper, can pose challenges during recycling. Plastic bags and entanglers such as hoses and outdoor lights can damage recycling machinery before they are sorted.

Here are some easy steps you can take to avoid wishcycling in your blue recycling cart:


* Check your items before purchasing them.
* Stick to the basics of paper/cardboard, plastic, metal, and glass. You can also use the Waste Wizard tool available on the website at www.fortworthtexas.gov/solidwaste [ [link removed] ] or on the Fort Worth Garbage & Recycling App.
* Be sure to empty any food or liquid residue, clean the items, and allow them to dry to prevent contamination.

Save the date for
America Recycles Day!

The City of Fort Worth is celebrating America Recycles Day! Enjoy a week full of family fun with recycling activities and hands-on learning. With story time, arts and crafts from recycled materials, recycling games, and more, there are plenty of chances to participate in the fun.

Also, on November 15 from 10 am – 12 pm, stop by the Golden Triangle Library and the Vivian J. Lincoln Library for live demonstrations, interactive booths with recycling education, promotional giveaways, and a special guest appearance from WM.

YardSmart: Growing
Green Together

Every fall and spring, Fort Worth’s Water Department hosts the *YardSmart seminar*. This free, family-friendly event teaches simple ways to care for your yard and garden while saving water and protecting the environment.

Last month, the event was held at the Rose Marine Theater with sessions in both English and Spanish. Participants learned about topics like:


* How to use drip irrigation
* Why insects are good for gardens
* Composting basics

Keep Fort Worth Beautiful (KFWB) team member, Natalie Nava, gave a composting presentation in both English and Spanish. She explained how to build a compost bin, reviewed the basics, and shared helpful resources.

Another KFWB team member, Veronica Mendez, greeted participants at the KFWB booth. She shared details about upcoming events, answered questions, and handed out resources.

The next *YardSmart seminar* will be held in *spring 2025*. Don’t miss the chance to learn more about keeping your yard healthy and eco-friendly.

Enjoying Outdoor
Fires in a Safe Way

Cooler weather means more people are spending time outside. This is a good time to remind everyone what is and isn’t allowed when it comes to outdoor burning.  Clean air is important for everyone’s health—especially kids, older adults, and people with breathing problems like asthma. Outdoor burning can create smoke and pollution, so Texas has rules to limit it.

Outdooring is not allowed to burn household waste such as trash, yard waste or other household items or when burn bans are in effect by the county to prevent wildfires. 

In most cases, outdoor burning in Texas is not allowed, but there are a few exceptions such as bonfires, campfires, and outdoor cooking with clean, untreated wood.

If you are allowed to burn, always:


* Call your fire department before you start.
* Check the weather and wind so smoke does not blow into neighboring homes or across roads.
* Avoid burning on Air Pollution Action Days, when the air is already unhealthy.

Residents who notice air quality issues can report them through the MyFW App, by calling 817-392-1234, or by emailing [email protected]. The City investigates all reports, and violators may face fines or enforcement actions through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) [ [link removed] ]. Reports can be made anonymously.
