Dear John,

Autumn’s here. As the heat of the summer dies down, we want to say a massive thank you.

During what were often troubling months we're so grateful for every action or donation you've made for people and planet. And to everyone we've met at our local groups' stalls and on protests (and counter protests).

While we may be wrapping up for the colder months, that doesn’t mean we’ll be slowing down. With Nigel Farage pledging to “drill baby drill” and Kemi Badenoch’s talk of ripping up the Climate Change Act ( [link removed] ), we can't. Read on to find out what we’re up to, and how you can get involved.

Making sure the government can't miss the message

We’ve been at the Labour party conference in Liverpool this week. We were there to show the government just how many people say people and planet matter more than greed.

On Monday we presented the housing minister with our massive petition to stop the government’s planning reforms wrecking nature ( [link removed] ). We have billboards all around Liverpool calling for a new law to hold greedy corporations responsible for harm hidden in their supply chains.

And we’re getting in some last-minute campaigning to strengthen the government’s climate plan – which it has to publish this month.

Revealing Wales’s toxic industrial legacy

Wales’s industrial past has left a history of toxic waste.

Councils in Wales officially recognise 82 contaminated sites.

But Friends of the Earth Cymru’s research found there’s potentially dangerous pollution at 45,000 sites.

This creates a massive hidden risk for communities throughout Wales. Which is why we’re demanding a public inquiry.

Let’s put an end to “drill baby drill”

The backlash against Nigel Farage’s pledge to “drill baby drill” is growing – including in areas run by Reform-led councils.

Yesterday at the Labour Party conference Ed Miliband announced plans to “Send the Frackers Packing” ( [link removed] ) with a permanent ban on the method. But we need to make sure the government actually does it. If you haven’t signed our petition yet, please do so today.

Local action near you

Our local action groups are the heart and soul of Friends of the Earth. They take action in their communities on local, national and global issues. Wherever you are in the UK, there’s something happening:

Last month a new group launched in North Yorkshire – welcome Friends of the Earth Knaresborough and Harrogate! And No Nuclear Cwm Llynfi held its first public meeting to oppose nuclear developments in South Wales. Over 50 people came along to explore tactics.

Do you know what’s going on at a Friends of the Earth community group near you?

Anti-racism at Friends of the Earth

As an anti-racist organisation, Friends of the Earth actively fights against racism and racist rhetoric.

Our chief executive took to the stage at the #StandUpToRacism demonstration ( [link removed] ) on 13 September to make it clear that the fight for racial justice, for climate justice and for economic justice is one and the same. And it’s a fight we can only win together.

We’ve also got a new guide to show why anti-racism is so important. It shows what anti-racist action we take. And it shows what you can do.

Keeping warm without breaking the bank

Autumn’s here. That means turning on the heating. It also means worrying about energy bills…

To ease the strain, we’ve made a list of simple ways to save on your energy bills during the colder seasons.

Putting forest defenders first

“Indigenous peoples are the best forest defenders…”

SAVE Rivers is an organisation made of Indigenous communities in Borneo. They work to protect their ancestral land, rainforests and rivers. Their managing director, Celine Lim, spoke with us recently about their work.

Thanks for reading this month’s news round up. We'll be in touch again soon.

Best wishes,
