Dear John, With the start of a new school season, I think of the countless students who are pressured to dissect animals in school. Millions of cats, frogs, pigs, and birds are raised in brutal conditions and killed every year. This practice is cruel, wasteful, and unnecessary. You can join the movement to stop this suffering. Make a special gift today, as the new school year is underway. I’m the Director of Animalearn, a program of AAVS. We support students, teachers, and school administrators by offering cruelty-free alternatives to classroom dissection. Livia Aschheim of Cupertino High School in California is an example of a student who didn't want to dissect dead animals. “I know so many students were uncomfortable with dissection,” she said. “Children shouldn’t have to go against their religious or personal values for a grade.” Because of Livia’s determination and proactive steps to find alternatives to fetal pig dissections at her school, Animalearn honored her as our 2024 Humane Student of the Year. As part of her award, we provided a fetal pig model that she donated to her school’s science department.
