Six
months have passed since a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck
Myanmar, leaving a trail of destruction and despair in its wake.
Over 3,800 lives were lost and 5,000 people were injured as infrastructure
and homes were reduced to rubble across Mandalay, Sagaing, and Magway.
Even before the disaster, Myanmar faced a dire humanitarian crisis, with
nearly 20 million people in urgent need of aid and 3.2 million people
displaced internally. A decline in international humanitarian funding had
already made survival even harder.
The earthquake massively compounded existing needs, striking the heart of
an area already sheltering displaced civilians — many of whom have endured
years of conflict and economic hardship.

Mercy Corps has been working in Myanmar since 2008. Our long-standing
presence and local partnerships allowed us to mobilize quickly after the
earthquake hit. Working with these local partners and our existing
footprint in affected areas, we were able to help communities access
shelter, food, medicine and other essentials.
In addition, we continue to help farmers better prepare for and cope with
extreme weather, including widespread flooding that struck the region in
July. We are also working with communities on conflict resolution. We’ve
reached more than 600,000 people since 2022.
We’re continuing to do all we can to help those affected by these
compounding crises, even as conflict makes it difficult to reach some
families.
Thank you for your compassion for families facing conflict and disaster.
We’ll continue to keep you updated on our response in Myanmar.
Sincerely,
The Mercy Corps team
