Dear John,

The government just shut down because Republicans chose political games over responsible leadership.

Democrats were at the table up until the deadline, pushing to pass a budget and avoid a shutdown — but Republicans refused to protect affordable health care for millions of Americans, letting the government shut down instead.

The impacts of this will be disastrous, John.

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers will be furloughed or have to work without pay.

Critical programs and services that our country relies on could face delays and disruptions.

And because Republicans were unwilling to extend the Affordable Care Act health care subsidies that kept costs down for working families, tens of millions of Americans could see their health care costs rise.

In my district, some of my constituents could see health care costs increase by over 1000%.

It doesn’t have to be this way, John. Our government should be looking out for working families, not abandoning them.

I’ll keep fighting to end this shutdown, protect access to affordable health care, and defend our democracy from authoritarian outreach.
