The school year is in full swing, Herbert. And it’s up to all of us to help keep them safe this school year.
Here are 5 things you can do TODAY to help keep our schools safe:
- Support school safety policies. Evidence-based safety protocols help keep everyone safe. These include secure entrances, emergency preparedness plans, and threat assessment teams.
- Support students’ mental health in school and at home. Learn to recognize behaviors that may signal someone is in crisis, such as sudden withdrawal, threats, or drastic mood changes, and report concerns to school officials or mental health professionals.
- Secure firearms responsibly at home. Safe storage can prevent unauthorized access and stop tragedies before they happen. If you’re a firearm owner, we recommend you store it unloaded, locked, and separate from ammunition.
- Help create safe spaces for kids. Whether it’s after-school sports and clubs or mentoring programs, supporting programs for kids in your community gives them the opportunity to build connections, express their emotions safely, and get help when they need it.
- Sign the pledge to keep our schools safe from violence. Commit to being part of the solution: Add your name today to join the movement for safer schools.
