Dear John,
Government workers in Canada enjoy, on average, higher wages and more generous benefits than their private-sector counterparts.
In fact, government employees across Canada — including federal, provincial and municipal workers — were paid 26.1% higher wages, on average, than workers in the private sector in 2024.
Even after adjusting for differences such as age, gender, education, tenure, type of work, industry, and occupation, government employees are still paid 4.8% higher wages.
But wages are only part of overall compensation. Government workers enjoy much more generous non-wage benefits too, such as pensions, early retirement, personal leave, and job security.
At a time when governments across Canada are facing immense fiscal pressures, bringing government sector compensation in line with the private sector would help reduce costs without necessarily disrupting services.
