We have exciting news to share with you: nearly 20,000 young Dreamers in San Diego County may soon have an opportunity to apply for temporary legal status and work permits through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
For years, this program has been a vital lifeline for young immigrants like me who grew up in the United States, providing necessary protection, stability, and safe spaces to learn, work, and thrive. Alliance San Diego helped thousands of Dreamers at its inception, and thousands more will soon be eligible. Although it has never been a permanent pathway to citizenship, DACA has been a game-changer for me and many others. With DACA, I was able to attend the University of San Diego, be the first in my family to graduate college, and then get my dream job to assist the immigrant community in San Diego, where I was raised.

What we know right now is that a federal judge is expected to order the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to begin processing new DACA applications again in the coming weeks. That means that younger Dreamers who have not been able to apply over the last five years will now have their chance. While the official ruling has yet to be announced, we believe that it is important for families and community members to begin preparing now.
First-time DACA applicants may experience a bit of overwhelm — I know I did — but Alliance San Diego is here to help, to support applicants every step of the way. If you or someone you know may be eligible for DACA, now is the time to take these two steps: - Gather important documents that show your eligibility.

Who is eligible? The criteria to apply are that applicants: - Entered in the U.S. before their 16th birthday

Have continuously resided in the US since June 15, 2017
- Were present in the U.S. on June 15, 2012
- Had no lawful status on June 15, 2012

Were under 31 years of age as of June 15, 2012;
- Are currently enrolled in school, have a high school diploma, or a GED certificate

Have not been convicted of a felony, a significant misdemeanor, or 3 misdemeanors

Tenemos noticias emocionantes para compartir con ustedes: casi 20,000 jóvenes Dreamers en el condado de San Diego pronto podrían tener la oportunidad de solicitar un estatus legal temporal y permiso de trabajo a través del programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA, por sus siglas en inglés).
Durante años, este programa ha sido fundamental para los jóvenes inmigrantes, como yo, que crecimos en Estados Unidos. Alianza San Diego ayudó a miles de Dreamers desde el inicio del programa, y miles más pronto serán elegibles. Aunque nunca ha sido una vía permanente hacia la ciudadanía, DACA ha sido un cambio trascendental para mí y para muchos otros.
