October 1, 2025
Dear John,
As you may know, funding for the federal government ended at midnight. Shutdowns are stupid and I’m working to reopen the federal government. I’ve also introduced legislation to prevent government shutdowns in the future through the Eliminate Shutdowns Act.
I want to make sure you are aware of the status of services provided by my office and other federal agencies.
My Office
My team and I will be working through this shutdown. We will continue to assist constituents with federal agencies, but agency responses may be delayed. If you are having issues with a federal agency, please contact my office at 605-275-2868 or by visiting help with a federal agency.
Flag requests and Capitol tours will be suspended until the government reopens.
Social Security
Social Security payments will continue. If you are seeking benefit verification or disability claims, you may experience processing delays.
Medicare and Medicaid
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services programs will continue to operate as normal during the shutdown.
Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)
All VA Medical Centers, Outpatient Clinics, and Vet Centers will be open. VA benefits, including compensation, pension education, and housing benefits will continue to be processed.
The VA Contact Center will remain open and can be reached at 1-800-MyVA411. The Veterans Crisis Center is also available 24/7 to help veterans who call or text 988.
U.S. Postal Service
U.S. Postal Service will not be interrupted.
Department of Agriculture
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will continue to be paid. A prolonged shutdown may impact these benefits. Additionally, funding for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) may stop during the shutdown.
Farm Service Agency
The Farm Service Agency will continue to service farm loans during this time, and it will also provide emergency loans, although this service may be slower than usual.
TSA
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will continue to operate, though some delays are possible. I recommend getting to the airport earlier than normal to ensure you make your flight.
Passports
There is currently a 4-6 week processing time for routine passport applications. The shutdown may lead to longer delays. If you plan to travel internationally and you need to renew your passport or get a new passport, it is recommend that you begin the process as soon as possible.
If you are currently abroad, U.S. consular services will still be provided.
National Parks
National Parks may be closed to visitors during the lapse in funding. I recommend checking a park’s status ahead of any planned visit.
Rest assured, my team and I will continue to work throughout this government shutdown. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need assistance.
