Two national awards [ [link removed] ]
"ON THE ROAD
WITH TONY..."

Welcome to our September newsletter!

Back in May, we won two national awards for our "improvements and innovations" in the Jury Room and our overall "operational efficiency" in Register of Deeds and Vital Records.

Two examples are our new Jury Service post card-sized summons and our online resources for starting a business.

Partnering with district courts cut our annual jury questionnaire mailings from over 21,000 to under 10,000, saving taxpayer dollars. Switching to postcard-sized summons also reduced postage costs by 48%, despite a 15% postage rate increase.

See the feature below about how easy it is to start a business in Macomb County. We have also reduced wait times in our offices to five minutes or less, eliminated the use of voice mails during working hours, and made sure callers speak to a live person instantly.

Of course, we are also very proud of our free "Fraud Notify" alert service, a simple way to be notified of possible fraud, which has reached *over 19,000* Macomb County sign-ups.

See feature below!

"How to Register Your New Business"

Business Registration Web site

At the Macomb County Clerk's Office, residents can register (or renew) a business under an assumed name. This registration is also known as a "DBA" (Doing Business As). Applicants will file as a "Sole Proprietorship" (one owner) or a "Co-Partnership" (two or more owners). The fee is $10 to register a business name.

You must be at least 18 years of age to file a business registration. Business registrations are valid for five years.

Corporations and LLCs (Limited Liability Company) are formed through the State. *You do not want to be registered with both the County and the State, because that would be two different legal structures with two different levels of liability. Choose one or the other, not both.* If you have a partnership, it is strongly recommended that you have a written agreement no matter what your legal structure may be. *Most importantly our staff does not offer legal advice; please seek out a qualified professional before making a decision.*
