Dear Friend,

The early days of October usually bring cooler temperatures and exciting college football matchups. However, this October brings a federal government shutdown. Almost two weeks ago, I voted alongside my Republican colleagues to pass a clean, nonpartisan continuing resolution (CR) to keep the government funded for seven weeks to give our appropriations committee a little more time to finish the appropriations process. This CR had no partisan agenda items attached to it; its only goal was to ensure the government stayed open. Unfortunately, the Democrats are prioritizing a political agenda over the well-being of the American people.

By Senate Democrats refusing to vote for this clean CR and get it to the 60-vote threshold required by the Senate, they decided to shut down the federal government. Instead of keeping the government open, the Democrats are pushing for $1.5 trillion in additional government spending, repealing the Rural Health Transformation Fund, and giving illegal immigrants free taxpayer-funded healthcare.

During the government shutdown, my offices will remain open to communicate with constituents and assist with casework. Unfortunately, if you are traveling to Washington, D.C., during the shutdown, all tours of the United States Capitol, FBI Headquarters, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, White House, and Library of Congress are canceled. As of right now, the Smithsonian will continue to operate as normal until at least Monday, October 6. We will also be unable to fulfill flag requests at this time.

If you have any questions about how the shutdown will affect your day-to-day life, please visit this page on my website. If you still have questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

Sincerely,

Gary Palmer
