The government just shut down because Democrats refused to cave to Republicans’ demands to gut affordable healthcare.

Here’s what is at stake under their plan:

• Premiums will double for many Americans when tax credits for the Affordable Care Act expire at the end of the year.
• Rural hospitals will close as Medicaid cuts made earlier this year will take effect.
• Trump will seize Congress’s power to fund programs—an affront to the Constitution.

I will not accept devastating cuts to healthcare just to pass a stopgap measure. And I refuse to allow Trump to trample the Constitution and reappropriate funds as he sees fit.

This shutdown is about more than a short-term funding bill. It’s about protecting working families' access to affordable healthcare. It’s about saving rural hospitals from closing due to massive Medicaid cuts. And it’s about preventing Trump from taking the power of the purse away from Congress.
