John,
We are officially in a government shutdown. Congress failed to meet the September 30 funding deadline, leaving critical services shuttered and millions in limbo.
Over the last 50 years, the government has shut down 21 times, with the longest one lasting 35 days in 2018. A shutdown isn’t just politics in Washington. It impacts millions of Americans’ daily lives:
- 750,000 federal workers could be furloughed or even lose their jobs permanently.
- 41 million families could lose food assistance from programs like SNAP and WIC.
- 3 million daily U.S. travelers could face airport delays as TSA agents and air traffic controllers are asked to work without pay.
- Millions of students, small business owners, and homeowners could see delays in their federal loans and grants.
- National parks and museums across the country could close their doors.
Services like Social Security, Medicare, law enforcement, hospitals, and the Postal Service will continue — but even these can face major delays or disruptions.
HOW LONG WILL THE SHUTDOWN LAST?
The government will stay shut down until Congress agrees on federal funding. Right now, Democrats and Republicans are not budging, with healthcare at the center of the fight. Until both sides reach a deal, the shutdown continues.
