Dear Friend,

Last week, Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks, Speaker of the House Matt Hall, and I announced an agreement to pass a balanced, bipartisan budget that delivers on the kitchen-table issues that make a real difference in people’s lives.

Right now, the Michigan Legislature is working to finalize a budget that will fix the damn roads, cut taxes for seniors and working families, protect Medicaid and hospitals, deliver another record education investment, provide free breakfast and lunch for students, make critical public safety investments, and more.

In the early hours of the morning today, I signed a continuation budget to keep the Michigan government open as the Legislature finalizes the full fiscal year budget. In Michigan, we’ve proven again and again that we can work together to get things done. Amid so much national economic uncertainty—and now a federal government shutdown—I am proud that we are taking action in Michigan to keep state government running and deliver for Michiganders.

I’m grateful to legislators on both sides of the aisle for their work. I am ready to conduct a final legal review of the budget and sign it into law after it is delivered to my desk. Meanwhile, state government will continue providing uninterrupted services, and all state employees will keep working and receiving pay, getting things done for their fellow Michiganders.

Let's get it done.

Sincerely,

Gretchen Whitmer

Governor
