Today, President Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress have shut down the federal government. Here in Maryland, where hundreds of thousands of people are employed or contracted by the federal government, we will feel the impact first. I stood alongside Governor Moore, Lieutenant Governor Miller, and other members of Team Maryland today to discuss this reckless action and what it means for our state.
Maryland has already lost 15,100 federal jobs to layoffs—more than any other state in the nation. At the same time, Americans’ cost of living continues to rise, driven in part by the Trump administration's misguided tariff policies.
We've been down this road before. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the last Trump shutdown resulted in an estimated $3 billion loss in economic activity nationwide. My office estimates that the 2019 shutdown cost Maryland over $13 million per day in statewide economic activity—a daily loss of $550,000 in state revenues, which equals more than $700,000 per day in today's dollars.
Maryland will not stand idly by while hardworking families suffer the consequences of Washington's dysfunction. We are activating state resources to support those workers affected. Working together with other state leaders, we are making state loan programs available to provide financial relief to federal workers during this crisis. No one should have to choose between paying their mortgage and putting food on the table because Congress failed to do its job. Visit marylandcomptroller.gov in the days ahead to find more resources.
This shutdown is not just reckless—it’s a betrayal of working families.
Republicans control both chambers and the presidency, yet they’ve chosen chaos over common sense. Instead of lowering health care costs and making life more affordable, they’re playing political games that will hurt thousands of federal workers who call Maryland home and jeopardize essential services our communities rely on.
Marylanders deserve better—and I will never stop fighting for them.
We have hundreds of thousands of federal workers in Maryland, and we are proud of their commitment to our nation. If you have friends or neighbors who are furloughed, check in on them, send them a message, and keep in touch. Thank you for being part of the solution in our state.
My best,
Brooke
