Hi John, Right now, families like yours and mine need more care, not less. Instead, we’re already feeling the impact of cruel Medicaid cuts, and if Congress does not act, 20 million people, including family caregivers, older adults, disabled people, and care workers, will see their health care costs double or lose care entirely when Affordable Care Act tax credits end.

On top of that, the majority in Congress chose not to address these cuts or reach an agreement on how to fund the government before the yearly September 30th deadline, forcing the government to shut down. This puts care at risk for all of us.

But here’s the good news: because of your advocacy and the power of our movement, care has remained front and center in Congress. This shutdown is directly tied to the accountability we’ve demanded and the actions we’ve taken. And we’re not stopping now.

Tell Congress to cancel the cuts [[link removed]]

This crisis didn’t come out of nowhere. Back in July, the majority in Congress chose to pay for tax giveaways for the wealthiest and big corporations by slashing more than $1 trillion from Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act. And now, care continues to be devalued under the Trump Administration by blocking and delaying funding for child care, releasing personal Medicaid data to deportation officials, and withholding $410 billion in funding previously signed into law that should be going toward critical care and services families rely on.

Congress knows how these decisions hurt families, caregivers, and care recipients, yet they still choose to shut down the government. Here’s what that means:

* Older adults, disabled people, and caregivers could experience disruptions to services they depend on. For example, while people already eligible and verified to receive Social Security will continue to receive their checks in the mail, people newly eligible and applying for Social Security and Medicare recipients may experience delays.
* Federal workers in every state and DC are already undersupported after severe staffing cuts under this administration. Now, they face furloughs and missed paychecks – some may lose pay entirely. This impacts caregivers and care recipients who already struggle to afford and access care. It also impacts the housing, transportation, and employment services that support people to live and age in their own homes and communities.

This moment calls for leadership. Instead of doubling down on harmful cuts, Congress can repeal these cuts, make health care affordable by continuing Affordable Care Act tax credits, and safeguard care programs, but only if we keep up the pressure.

Will you join me in telling Congress to repeal the Medicaid cuts and prioritize our care?

With care,
