You’ve probably already seen the headlines: The Republican-controlled Congress failed to show up and pass funding for the government, and as a result, things officially shut down at midnight last night. Yesterday the entire Democratic caucus was in attendance to try and stop the shutdown, with not a single Republican to be found:
Here’s what this means for people across the country:
- Millions of federal workers won’t get their paychecks on time.
- Services people rely on—like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid—will face delays.
- Lifesaving food assistance program funding could run out completely if this lasts more than a month.
- And Donald Trump is even taking advantage of the situation—threatening to fire more federal workers.
Why is this happening? Because Republicans are refusing to extend the health care subsidies that make it possible for millions of families to afford their insurance. If they get their way, premiums will skyrocket, and people will lose coverage.
Democrats in Congress are fighting to restore those subsidies and refusing to vote for a budget that funds MAGA priorities. With Republicans controlling the House and Senate, the truth is that Democrats’ leverage is limited—which is why it’s critical that we flip the House in 2026.
