We are excited to share that a major documentary film about President Carter's historic effort to eradicate Guinea worm disease is now available to stream on Amazon. The President and the Dragon, a film by Sudanese filmmaker Waleed Eltayeb, tells the story of an unlikely group of "Guinea worm warriors" who spent four decades combating the debilitating parasitic disease in the most remote places on the planet.
You can learn more about the film and find a link to the Amazon page at CarterCenter.org. Proceeds from each rental of the film will support The Carter Center's global mission to wage peace, fight disease, and build hope.
When the campaign started in 1986, there were 3.5 million cases of Guinea worm disease each year. Last year, there were just 15. The film shares how public health veterans, community leaders in remote communities, and ex-child soldiers worked together to achieve a triumph in global health. Guinea worm is poised to be only the second human disease to be eradicated -- and the first without a vaccine or medicines.
"My grandfather desperately wanted to outlive Guinea worm, and he came remarkably close to doing it," said Jason Carter, Carter Center board chair and the eldest grandson of President Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter. "He witnessed firsthand what freeing a community from this terrible disease meant to people's daily lives, and The Carter Center will keep working until there are zero cases."
We hope you will watch the documentary with family and friends. You can watch the trailer here. Please share it with your networks and encourage them to watch The President and the Dragon.
