I was thrilled to be back in my childhood hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, this week for the Forum's annual Leading the Way conference.

We heard from Americans across the political spectrum on immigration. One of the big takeaways: They want Republicans and Democrats to work together to make sure our government, including our immigration system, functions and responds to the needs of the people our elected officials represent.

Even at such a challenging time in our nation’s immigration conversation, national security, law enforcement, business and faith leaders from across the country joined us this week to discuss ideas for practical immigration solutions that work for all Americans, our communities and our economy.

We heard about how Nashville thrives because of the collective contributions of all individuals who live and work in this amazing city. (Thanks in part to an audience member’s question, we also got great local restaurant and other culture recs.) We had a reasonable conversation about interior and border enforcement, discussed how certain policy changes represent a U.S. shrinking from the world stage, and highlighted positive changes that remain possible in this moment.

Not least, we celebrated people who are working courageously, under very difficult circumstances, for solutions that matter to their communities, their districts, and to America.

It was heartening to see so many people ready to come to the table, talk and work toward the solutions that will make America thrive and restore welcome. I can only hope that everyone left with the same sense of promise as I do.
