By refusing to negotiate, Trump and Congressional Republicans have steered us directly into a government shutdown — one that jeopardizes food and water safety inspections, water protections, and food assistance for new parents and young children.

As devastating as a shutdown is, we need Senate Democrats to hold the line against passing the Republican spending bill that allows massive cuts – we can’t allow safe food and clean water to be used as a bargaining chip.

The House Republican spending bill (H.R. 5371) is a resolution to continue Trump’s dangerous agenda. It may pretend to keep government funding stable, but in reality, it allows for Trump and his allies to slash essential food, water, and health programs through a backdoor process called partisan rescissions. The bill:

• Gives Trump and Congressional Republicans unilateral power to claw back critical funding after it’s already been approved.

• Underfunds WIC, risking food support for more than half a million young children and new parents.

• Threatens funding for vital clean water projects, undermining local governments’ ability to adequately fund their municipalities' water, leading to higher costs for households, and risking public health for millions.

• Fails to include critical protections for healthcare, which would significantly raise healthcare costs and loss of coverage for millions of Americans, especially small business owners and working families.

The solution is clear: Senate Democrats must reject this dirty deal.

They must hold strong, vote NO on H.R. 5371, and instead pass Senator Murray’s counter-proposal (S. 2882). This alternative fully funds programs like WIC, protects clean water and food safety, and prevents Trump and Congressional Republicans from enacting Trump’s dangerous cuts later.
