Dear Friends,
After President Trump told Republicans to “not even bother” negotiating with Democrats to keep government open and address skyrocketing health care costs, House Republicans canceled votes and left Washington. Government funding expired last night at midnight.
As we have seen in the past, a government shutdown has serious impacts across the nation, hurting working families and damaging our economy. I am working with my colleagues to responsibly re-open government and take action to address the rising price of health care. To help you navigate this period of uncertainty, my office has prepared answers to these frequently asked questions HERE. You can also contact us at 860-278-8888.
Under the Republican budget President Trump signed into law, 15 million Americans stand to lose health coverage, including 37,000 residents of Connecticut’s First District. With Affordable Care Act tax credits set to expire, 19,000 district residents will see their premiums skyrocket. The average family of four will see costs increase by $2,571.
Last week, I visited InterCommunity Health Care in East Hartford with Senator Richard Blumenthal to hear directly from advocates and call for action to protect families from these health care cuts. You can view my remarks below.
If Republicans thought we would rubber stamp their reckless cuts and saddle families with higher health care premiums, they better think again. Every House and Senate Democrat came together with a plan to re-open the government, lower costs, and protect access to health care. We are ready to end this shutdown and Donald Trump’s health care crisis. Republicans need to stop taking marching orders from their out-of-touch president and come to the table for the people they are sworn to serve.
