The 4th of July is supposed to celebrate the ideals of freedom and liberty for all, but for many of us that American promise has fallen short. This may be America's birthday, but in 1776, my own ancestors were still enslaved in this country. Just last night I led a protest in St. Louis because we have yet to witness any true commitment to
protecting Black lives.
As an activist, as an essential worker, as a pastor, and your candidate for U.S. Congress, it is my priority to put people first. So when I get asked what will set us free, I respond:
We will be free when #BlackLivesMatter. When #BlackTransLivesMatter.
When we finally #DefundThePolice and #AbolishICE.
When we #CancelRent and invest in #MedicareForAll.
When we pass the #GreenNewDeal and guarantee #HousingForAll.
When we start truly valuing black women, and arrest the cops who murdered #BreonnaTaylor.
My heart breaks knowing Breonna’s family—like so many others—are still seeking justice for their loved one. But I’m also strengthened and
inspired by the millions of people who have learned her name and taken to the streets because of her story.
because her life matters. My daughter’s life matters. My son—his life matters. We deserve to live in a country where freedom does ring true for all of us.
In solidarity,
Cori Bush is running for Congress in
Missouri’s 1st District to be a courageous voice for the people of Eastern Missouri. A nurse, progressive Democrat, and mother, Cori will fight to ensure a brighter future where everyone in Eastern Missouri has the
