A Possible Government Shutdown
Dear Neighbor,
I wanted to share an update on a possible government shutdown by extreme conservatives and my efforts to support you and your families during this time. Thanks to the cruelty and games of a few, our communities are facing the threat of a government shutdown on midnight on September 30, 2025.
While I‘m doing everything I can to keep the government open and essential services running, I want to make sure you have the information you need regarding any potential shutdown and how it might affect you. Here’s what you should know:
How Did We Get Here?
Each year, Congress must pass legislation to fund government operations for the coming fiscal year. Democrats are united in pressing to maintain funding for the programs our communities need. However, since Day 1, extreme conservatives have been working to gut our government and rip away the essential services, federal jobs, and core functions of government.
As a result, unemployment is surging, costs are rising, and folks in Massachusetts and across the country are facing a healthcare crisis thanks to Republicans’ Big, Ugly Bill, which ripped away Medicaid from millions of people and will cause insurance premiums to skyrocket.
Now, they want to shut down the government instead of working with Democrats to address the harm they caused.
Harmful Impact
We deserve assurances that our government can serve us, and the harmful tactics of extreme conservatives, who currently control the federal government, risk impacting government services and weakening our economy. And the consequences are dire for folks in the Massachusetts 7th and beyond.
Without action by Donald Trump and Congress, many of the Affordable Care Act tax credits that help lower the cost of premiums will expire soon and tens of thousands of people in the Massachusetts 7th will see huge premium increases. In our district:
- 29,000 people will see their health care costs rise if Republicans let these critical tax credits expire; and
- 35,512 people will lose health coverage because of Republican cuts to MassHealth in the Big Ugly Law and their plot to gut the Affordable Care Act.
Under a government shutdown, families could also be evicted from their homes, seniors may not be able to get assistance with their benefits, federal workers and contractors—including the nearly 25,000 federal workers in Massachusetts and more than 7,000 in the Massachusetts 7th—could miss paychecks, women, children, and infants in the Commonwealth could lose nutrition assistance, and communities in Massachusetts that are reeling from natural disasters may not get the relief they need.

What I’m Advocating For
Republicans control the House, Senate and White House right now and need to put forward a budget that addresses the healthcare crisis that their harmful policies have created.
Our communities deserve better. Conservative extremists should stop playing games with people’s lives and work with us to keep the government open and address the harm they caused.
